Protecting yourself from Cyberbullies

July 12th, 2010 | Posted by Kelvin Tan in Cyberwellness - (0 Comments)

Cyberbullies are on the rise and schools are undoubtedly doing all they can to educate students on how to deal with cyberbullying. But who really pays attention in school? This is a quick rundown of cyberbullying, how to recognise it, and how to deal with it.

A cyberbully is simply a bully who operates online, in cyberspace. Instead of hanging out at the playground, he waits in forums and chatrooms and torments, threatens, harasses, humiliates, embarrasses or otherwise attacks you. His actions can make you feel anything from depressed to anxious or even suicidal.

Because the physical element is missing from cyberspace, the cyberbully uses emotional and mental attacks to get at you. Some methods of cyberbullying are taunting, spamming you with threats or insults, identity theft or even exluding you from online activities with your group of friends. Bullying in real life becomes cyberbullying when photos and videos are posted online. Don’t worry though, there are ways to avoid becoming a victim of cyberbullying.

The internet may be pervasive, but it can do little if you choose to ignore it.

Remember to never give out personal information online! By keeping to this, you are preventing cyberbullying from spilling into real life, where physical harm can be caused.

Don’t give out your passwords! If a cyberbully gets a hold of your accounts, he can use it to send out offensive messages, pictures, or even viruses to your friends.

Never open emails from people you don’t know, or worse, from people who you know are after you! Delete the email as it may contain viruses, threats or worse.

This final method of avoiding cyberbullying involves some proactiveness on your part: be polite to everyone you meet online. It may be tempting to be rude and aggressive because you’re anonymous on the internet, but hold back. Remember that there is a person behind that computer screen, and respect him or her.

If you’ve already become a victim of cyberbullying, there are also fuss free ways to deal with it.

Tell an adult, or a friend you trust. You can make reports to either your school or to the police.

If you are being threatened or spammed, ignore the messages. Most bullies do mean things to get a reaction out of you. If you ignore them, they’ll leave.

Lastly, notify your internet or mobile phone server providor. Most sites allow you to report abuse, but keep in mind that you will need evidence for the report.

In the event that you’re playing a game, like World of Warcraft, and you get harrassed/insulted/camped/spammed, open a ticket! Speak to a GM! Game Masters are the policemen of virtual worlds, and they’re often as kind and as understanding as real policemen. Don’t be intimidated by them.

Though online attacks might seem like petty things, they’re not. Cyberbullying is getting more and more common, with children as young as Primary 2 becoming victims. Schools have been given guidelines in case of such situations, and cyberbullying makes for a valid police report. Don’t be ashamed if you’ve become the target of a cyberbully, report them!

Champions of Newerth

Triumph was word of the day at the Heroes of Newerth qualifier tournament finals on Sunday, 30th May 2010. The top three teams were awarded prizes for their efforts and attempts at the game. We love you Razer for your kind sponsorship of the prizes, as well as Lenovo for the awesome gaming machines the tournament took place on! The prize giving ceremony was honoured by Frank Yong, director of 3K Entertainment. And of course, co-founder of SCOGA, Nicholas.

Third place went to DsD.mianbaoheroes.

They got Razer mousepads for their valiant struggle!
DsD.mianbaoheroes is made up of Kennedy, Zac, Jordan Lim, Jonathan Lok, and Timothy Jung. I hope you guys do better next year! Team ABC took second place.

Razer keyboards for all! Just the thing the ‘lock in the centre needs.
Team ABC’s members are Lim Zhi Ping, Jabaoz, John Teo, Patrick, and Aloysius Tong.

And in first place… Princess Council!
They won tickets for the entire team to the Shanghai World Expo, where they will represent Singapore in yet another HoN tournament, as well as to Dreamhack, largest LAN party in the world, in Sweden!

The faces of champions? Definitely.
Teo Shi Ping, Neo Qi Zhi, Neo Jian Xiang, Benjamin Erh, and Kenny Widjaja kicked butt as Princess Council.
Gratz all, and Princess Council, please do Singapore proud!

Licence 2 Play 2010

June 10th, 2010 | Posted by Kelvin Tan in Events - (0 Comments)

The 2nd inaugural year of Licence2Play (L2P) was undoubtedly a hit! Competitions went smoothly, events were back-to-back, and more importantly, loot was in abundance all round! Think free comics, dirt cheap flatscreen TVs, and even a chance to play brand new games, FOR FREE! The highlight (for me) was undoubtedly Starcraft II, unveiled after a painfully 10 year wait. It was accompanied by games like Monster… Forest… Think WoW with cutesy graphics. Dragonica unveiled a new expansion: Revenge of Paris, while good old Counterstrike was given a revamp into Counterstrike Online, and faithful Animal Kaiser made an appearance. Fifa Online 2 was also unveiled in view of the coming World Cup. In that respect, our lovely country wasn’t to be outdone either: Singapore had A Singapore Odyssey for the coming Youth Olympic Games. But enough chatter! In this case, pictures definitely speak more than a thousand words. I could take up all the space on this page trying to tell you about the majesty of our stunted local Yautja… but I won’t. Read on!

Singaporean Yautja/Predators of Predator/Alien vs. Predator fame. They were unfortunately shorter than I expected, but it was still a treat to see them! I mean, OMG, YAUTJA!

Anyway. The SCOGA booth was planted smack in the middle of the action. Our neighbours were the NLB, Moviemania as well as the New Paper Cyber Challenge. Right on our own turf was the arena for the Heroes of Newearth competition, so you can imagine our excitement at L2P. We weren’t the only ones excited, either. Look at the queue outside…

So many people! And of all ages, races and genders! Gaming is definitely not a male-only thing. ;) Anyway here are the highlights of the show! The biggest booth inside was definitely the Activision-Blizzard showcase of the long awaited… STARCRAFT II! Though it was only the first instalment (Wings of Liberty), it was still really great.

BLIZZARD!! Starcraft II!! You could play quick skirmishes at the laptops placed around the booth. Everything surrounded the centre, where trailers were being played.

Yum.

It’s tough. And on a completely unrelated note, my favourite race is the Zerg!

This guy was playing Protoss. Boo. The dude below is Ryan, in charge of Blizz PR!

Blizzard also had some babes to engage the male community.

They were pretty hot. But not as hot as The New Paper Cyber Challenge! (TNPCC)

TNPCC had three game leagues one could compete in: Fifa Online 2, Dragonica PvP and Counterstrike Online. Here’s a glimpse of TNPCC’s competition area…

And SCOGA’s Heroes of Newearth (HoN) qualifiers setup!

Powered by Razer and Lenovo…

Replete with fancy backdrop.

Big thanks to partners of SCOGA: S2 Games, CPL and Dreamhack as well as Starhub, Lenovo and Razer! With such big guns on our side, everyone was definitely playing to win.

See their faces.

Team ABC

Team DsD.mianbaoheroes

The action could be watched on (literally) the big screen over by the spectator area.

During lulls in the HoN tournament, it was easy to wander over to the SCOGA booth to try your luck at winning a free iPad! All you had to do was sign up. The physical draw will be held on the 26th of June, and you’ll receive more info about it via email.

There was also a laptop out for visitors to pledge an hour of their lives to the SCOGA initiated GTR Hour.

And if those weren’t enough of a draw, SCOGA’s lovely booth assistants were on hand to give you a tour.

The exhibition set up covered everything you needed to know about cyberwellness.

And was endorsed by celebrity pro-gamer, Tammy aka furryfish

We also had the locally developed game, Singapore Odyssey, on display! Here’s Kimberlyn, one of our booth assistants, showing a kid how it’s played..

As mentioned much earlier in this post, the view from the SCOGA booth was great. We were the first to get these:

Since we were right next door! Look at the queue that formed.

The comics were only a precursor of the Falcon’s Hangar, a wonderland of toys and figurines.

And that wasn’t all. Since the Moviemania booth was just a few steps away, you never knew who would show up behind you.

Pimped out WoW characters…

Uruk-hai and Yautja

And even…

The SCOGA founders were also taken hostage, omg.

Did they emerge unscathed from Licence2Play?! Find out if anyone lived to give out the prizes of the Heroes of Newearth tournament here.

Get your License 2 Play this holiday!

It’s the start of the June holidays. What do you do?

Why, play, of course!

But… wait a minute. As you check your stash of games old and new, you realise that you’ve finished them all. Several times. And achieved perfect endings without the use of walkthroughs.

What do you play?
License2Play 2010 is in its 2nd year, and it’s hotter than ever.

Bored with DotA? Check out the Heroes of Newearth (HoN) qualifier tournament http://scoga.org/hon. HoN takes the essence of defending the ancients out of the equally ancient Warcraft III engine and puts it in a sleek new one developed by S2 Games. Lenovo, Intel and yes, Razer support both the gameplay requirements and your much-abused gamer’s wrist. To top it all off, SCOGA will bring you to new heights when you win… think Shanghai and Sweden.

Wait, you haven’t heard of HoN? Don’t worry: there’s the New Paper Cyber Challenge to take up, if you so fancy. With SCOGA’s blessing, you choose from a gaming arsenal of Fifa Online 2, Counter Strike Online, and Dragonica and fight to reveal your opponent’s inner noob. Do you have what it takes to boom! headshot?

If you don’t… there’s always the more sedate option of SCOGA’s Game To Read (GTR) Hour. Organised by gamers for gamers, GTR hour hopes to encourage and instil the habit of reading. Come pledge your gaming honour to this! Instead of staring at your computer screen, why not pick up a book? Internet access will be available at the SCOGA booth for you to log in and commit to GTR Hour on Facebook.

On top of GTR Hour, check out how you can game and still keep a healthy mind and body with SCOGA’s cyberwellness exhibition. Spanning a range of topics like computer security, internet addiction, pornography, cyberbullying, copyright and the dangers of cyber contact, it’s going to be one stop parents won’t miss!

And when you’re done, give the Singapore Game Box a test run. The Singapore Game Box is a compilation of games developed right here in our own backyards. Sign up to try it, and you might just win an iPad via the lucky draw! (Submitted forms are automatically entered, just make sure you put them in the right box!)

Don’t miss out. Get your License2Play this holiday!

Statement from SCOGA on CPL

April 4th, 2010 | Posted by Kelvin Tan in News - (0 Comments)

The management of the (Singapore) Cybersports & Online Gaming Association, better known as SCOGA, note with concern the recent blog post by Ms. Tonya Welch posted on complexitygaming.com and we were approached for a response by gamers who know that we have been in discussions with the new CPL in this part of the world.

While we are concerned, we also realized that we do not have enough information to make a clear judgment on the situation as we were not involved in the old CPL, WSVG, CGS and neither were we involved in the formation of the new CPL.

We are currently evaluating the implications of this blog post and also investigating if any Singaporean gamers are being owed dues by CPL, especially prior to SCOGA’s establishment in 2008. If you are a Singaporean gamer reading this and have unresolved payments from CPL, please contact us immediately at  info@scoga.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We remain committed to our mission and will continue to look for ways to engage the various international gaming communities.

We thank you for your kind attention.

On behalf of the Executive Committee,
Nicholas Aaron Khoo, Co-founder, Chairman
Kelvin Tan, Co-founder, President
(Singapore) Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (1135/2007)

About SCOGA:

The (Singapore) Cybersports & Online Gaming Association, better known as SCOGA, is a non-profit organization registered in March 2008. While SCOGA works with various stakeholders on programs ranging from gaming, eSports, to cyberwellness, one of our main functions is to cater to the best interest of the Singapore gaming population. One such example would be helping Singapore eSports representatives get leave from their schools and national service obligations for international tournaments. Another example would be when the local winners of the World Cyber Games (WCG) did not have the funds to represent Singapore in 2008 WCG Grand Finals in Cologne, Germany; SCOGA then heightened eSports awareness to the Singapore general public and collected enough funds through public donations to send four of our top gamers to Cologne to represent Singapore.
