Today’s Workshop Feature will be Albert Tan from SCOGA, who will be hosting a workshop for parents and teachers in dealing with cyber bullying against their kids.
1) Hi Albert! Please tell us more about yourself.
Hi everyone, I’m glad that you are interested in the topic of cyber bullying. To begin with, I’ll elaborate a bit more about myself. I’m a parent with a 9 year old boy, an educator who used to teach in an Institute of higher learning and a gamer who used to compete in WCG. What I am about to share and discuss is based on the experience that I have seen, encountered and observed. Hopefully, it will be beneficial to parents and teachers who are the guardians for potential victims of cyber bullying.
2) What makes you so passionate about the topic on cyber-bullying?
Cyber-bullying is getting increasing common with the availability of new technology. In fact, almost everyone get some form of cyber bullying one time or another. It can take the form of email, social network or any online platform. Such abuse can be daunting for adults who are supposed to be able to manage their emotions, let alone children who may affect their emotional and psychological growth.
3) What are the things attendees will expect to learn from your workshop?
Workshop will discuss common platform that cyberbullying can occur, forms of cyberbullying, how to handle bullies etc.
I will also briefly analysis some profiles of cyber bullies. Knowing the profile will help the parents understand and empathise both the bully and the bullied.
4) What is your number one tip for parents or teachers who have recently found out that their kid is being targeted online?
Provide emotional support and reassurance after notifying the authority.
5) Any last shout-outs?
Do not encourage your kid to change from being bullied to become a bully.

Albert Tan received Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) in 1999 and Master Degree in Microelectronics in 2004 from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He represented Singapore in numerous International overseas robotics competitions and his team secured many medals for Singapore. He was appointed as the Vice Chairman for the Film Consultative Panel in Media Development Authority (MDA) from 2012 to 2013. Albert started playing computer games since his Secondary School days and this hobby continues until today.
His passion in strategy games secured him the title of Second runner up in World Cyber Games 2005 (Singapore). He has since retired from competitive gaming and began to channel his energy into cyber-wellness development when he noticed that younger generations became vulnerable in the virtual world due to the rapid development of technology. His experience and knowledge as an educator, competitive gamer and a parent will be beneficial to parents whose child may face problem in dealing with the altering cyber dangers.
