Press Release: For Immediate Release
19 June 2020, Singapore — The Singapore Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) is pleased to announce that its Campus Legends student esports development platform is returning for a second season, this time as an online competition.
Organised by SCOGA, Campus Legends is supported by Official Partners Samsung and JBL, Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) including Republic Polytechnic and ITE College Central, and Supporting Partners BOLT+, HeyGroup, Klook, Lenovo Legion, National Youth Council, Red Bull, SGEEK, Singapore Sports Hub, and Yup.gg.
About Campus Legends
Campus Legends represents SCOGA’s continued commitment to support the education and development of young gaming talents, help develop industry-ready talents, and grow viable and rewarding careers in esports. It is a unique platform that:
(a) provides student gamers with a regular opportunity to represent their IHLs in esports;
(b) promotes values such as discipline, teamwork, resilience, integrity and sportsmanship through friendly competition; and
(c) provides opportunities to discover and develop various careers in and adjacent to the gaming industry.
The inaugural season of Campus Legends in 2019 was very well received, with over 95,000 unique viewers tuning in live for our competition broadcasts, and hundreds of participants turning up for our specially curated esports performance and industry workshops.
Competition finalists even had the chance to compete in the Singapore Indoor Stadium, while selected workshop participants also had the opportunity to work with seasoned industry professionals in organising and staging the Campus Legends competition itself.
What to expect from Campus Legends Season 2
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and our foremost concern is the safety and well-being of all students, this season of Campus Legends will be conducted in the form of an online-only esports tournament that is open to all local IHL students.
This season will feature two of the most popular esports titles in Singapore – League of Legends and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, with attractive cash and product prizes in store for the top four teams for each game title, including the latest flagship products from our Official Partners Samsung and JBL.
Same as with its inaugural season, half of the cash prizes will be awarded as scholarships in the form of Post-Secondary Education Account top-ups, to reinforce the importance of education to the holistic development of esports athletes and industry professionals.
This season will begin with intra-IHL qualifying rounds commencing 3 July 2020, where student teams will first compete for the opportunity to represent their respective IHLs. The winners of the qualifiers will then compete in a group stage for a place in the grand finals. All matches are scheduled to avoid school hours and examination periods.
In support of gaming as a safe social activity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Campus Legends is also supporting the Singapore Esports Association’s #SGPlaysTogether campaign.
The support for these initiatives is in addition to SCOGA’s ongoing efforts to support the community, in particular students, during these unprecedented times. SCOGA’s recent efforts include providing various engagement programmes for nearly 1,000 students during the circuit breaker period, as well as working with our partners to provide nearly 90 loaned and donated laptops for students with urgent needs for their home-based learning.
SCOGA will continue its efforts to support student development through various ways whilst the pandemic and its associated impact remain, and it welcomes all interested parties who wish to contribute to these efforts to get in touch via [email protected].
Nicholas Khoo, Chairman of SCOGA said: “It’s really humbling to know that SCOGA can make a difference, not only to local esports through our various programmes, but also to other aspects of Singaporeans’ lives, through the various initiatives the team has stepped up to implement in the past few months and especially during the circuit breaker period. I have been told by our partners that many students have benefited from our esports programmes and I believe Campus Legends will be extra impactful this year! On behalf of the team at SCOGA, I’d like to express our deepest gratitude to all our partners especially to the National Youth Council, ITE College Central, Republic Polytechnic, Samsung and JBL for their unwavering support to our students and aspiring esports players.”
Sarah Chua, Vice President, IT & Mobile, Samsung Electronics Singapore said: “Esports is gaining tremendous traction especially among youth and we are delighted for our suite of Galaxy devices to level up the gaming experience at this year’s Campus Legends. Galaxy S20+ will be our hero at the competition, featuring 120Hz screen refresh rate for an incredibly smooth gaming experience. Our flagship model boasts a large 4,500 mAh battery for users to game on for even longer and its fast charging function means users will not have to worry about being low on juice. The Galaxy S20+ comes with the unique Game Booster feature, with additional settings to optimise gaming performance by learning each user’s game play pattern and minimise distractions by disabling notifications while gaming.”
Grace Koh, Vice President and General Manager, Lifestyle Audio Division of Asia Pacific, JBL, stated: “It is a great honor to be partnering with SCOGA for the Campus Legends this year. Being the Official Audio Partner, we are excited to bring the JBL immersive sound experience with our extensive award-winning audio products in support of the education and development of young gaming talents in Singapore. We are looking forward to working with this new generation of youths in Singapore to attain their ambitions in the Esports industry.”
